History of Goji Berries
Historically, Chinese healers swore by the Goji Berry and promoted it extensively in their practice. Lycium barbarum, the Latin name for the wolfberry or goji berry, was also used by natural herbalists in Tibet, India and Nepal for centuries.
Growing and Harvesting Goji Berries
Lycium Barbarum, the goji berry variety in Himalayan Goji Juice, is grown in the Himalaya Mountain region. Goji berry plants require extreme growing conditions. In summer the plants thrive on scorching hot, humid weather and in winter frigid, subzero temperatures are best. Goji berry plants grow best in rich, sandy soil that is damp, yet drained.
In the fall, Goji berries are hand picked to avoid bruising as these berries are very soft. After being harvesting, the tiny, red berries are evaluated for nutritional value. Only those that meet our rigid guidelines are used; the others are discarded. Very quickly these berries are processed to preserve the nutrients.
Like most fruits and vegetables, goji berries will loose many of their nutrients in just 24 hours if they are not stabilized or processed. Before being manufactured as goji juice, the goji undergoes three lab evaluation for quality and purity. Only if they pass all three tests are they sold as Himalayan Goji Juice.
